Hey, what´s up guys! This is Robin Wakeham and welcome to the Back Pain Secrets podcast. Today I am going to talk about if you really want to get rid of your back pain…
I had a chance to go to lunch today with a guy here in Stockholm, who is also a back pain expert. He´s a really neat guy. It´s funny, because he´s been in Stockholm for about ten years now, and I´ve never bumped into him or met him. It´s always fun when you meet someone who´s in the same business as you yourself, right?
I met him, had lunch with him, and I had a really great time. I had one takeaway at the very end of our conversation that really jumped out to me. He said, “Robin, do you really think the majority of our back pain patients want to get rid of their back pain?” I was about to answer him but he stopped me and said, “Don’t answer until you’ve really thought about it properly. Give yourself a few minutes to think about the question. First, think about what you have to gain when you’re in pain? Isn’t the sympathy and the household work you’re escaping pretty sweet benefits? Do you really want to give this up? You’re the one in charge.”
He told me that he never baby´s his patients because it will not help them. He also told me that he never tries to convince his patients because they will lack the necessary motivation if he did. He told me I can only prescribe the medication to our patients but they are the ones who have to take it.
So my question to you back pain sufferer, who is listening to this podcast right now: So, will you? Is your pain so severe that you’re motivated to do something about it? How far are you willing to go to get rid of the back pain? Are you ready to leave your comfort zone or are you just listening to this podcast for fun?
The reason I’m pushing you to say ”Enough is enough! I don’t want to be in pain!” is because it’s important that you’re willing to change your behavior. You won’t get rid of your back pain by just listening to a podcast, reading a book, or even by starting to exercise.
Life changes and breaking habits are required. It may sound like a cliché but I have patients every week who refuse to change their behaviour, and they come back with back pain, again and again. I’ve met thousands of patients during my 20 years as a physiotherapist, and those who are prepared to change their lives have a bigger chance to make a full recovery.
I hope you guys liked this, and I will talk to you guys again probably tomorrow morning. Have a great night. And guys, remember you are just one step away from healing your back pain.
