BPS #041: How To Reduce Back Pain With Acupuncture…

Hey guys, this is Robin Wakeham from the Back Pain Secrets podcast. We are going to talk about how you can heal or reduce your back pain with acupuncture.

So to give you guys a bit of a backstory with this, and I’ve used acupuncture to treat my own back pain many years back. So 25 years back I injured my back playing ice hockey. I got knocked down . On the ice. I was in pain and for three years after that I injured my back quite severely. I was depressed. I was in pain daily. I couldn’t sleep. I had radiation down both my legs. I had weakness in my legs and I had problems just hanging out with my friends, spending time with my family, with my girlfriend. And it was horrible.. It was really horrible. At one time I actually felt like I didn’t want to live anymore because it was just the joy of life had just disappeared.

It was horrible. But during this three year period, I hve visited many people, different professionals to try to heal or reduce my back pain. And one of the things that I used that helped me, that didn’t take away all my pain, but it definitely helped me was acupuncture.

Acupuncture is nowadays supported by science. Meaning it’s government funded in some countries, not all countries. And the theory behind acupuncture is that it releases the endorphins and your body intervenes it’s kind of like your own body is on morphine. So we’re basically getting high on needles to keep it simple. There’s all kinds of theories behind it. I’m not going to go into the technical stuff, but just think it releases endorphins.

It’s like the body’s own morphine’s and you get relaxed. It reduces stress, it reduces pain, and it’s kind of a nice feeling if it’s done correctly. There’s a lot of people out there that don’t really know what they’re doing. So make sure that they have the right credentials. So and no one really knows 100% why it works, but it works.

There’s also this placebo effect and the effect is kind of like, something is done to you. But, you’re just so happy that someone’s doing something so that you don’t know if it’s the treatment or the happiness because someone’s doing it, helping you in some way.

So anyway, there’s different kinds of needles. When you guys, visit an acupuncturist, even if you go to like a respectable place, always check if they open up the needles from a fresh pack. So they had to rip that out up there and take the needle out. And when they take the knee lock, I’m going to show it up. It’s that big because you should only use the needles that that had been used once. And they should be sterilized and then they should throw them away.

Most people do that now, but, just be very cautious with this, you know, because you don’t want to get like , some disease or something when you go for an acupuncture. So you have the needle like that and then the acupuncturist will put the needle in in the skin like that. And then just twist it a bit. I’m actually showing this on my elbow now because I don’t want to show you guys my Harry old back. I’m kind of out of shape as well, so I don’t, want to gross you out.

So this is what happens. So you do that and you twist the needle and you have something called the little cheap and it’s like, oh, you got a little bump and then then it needs maybe between 20 to 40 minutes, you know, it depends. And there’s different kinds of needles. You know, this is kind of a small needle, but then they, they have bigger needles as well. You have have this, that’s kind of a bigger needle.

You will have this typically in your, buttocks or your thigh or something, somewhere where you have more meat on yourself or more fat. So the bigger the needle should be on your bigger muscles basically. Also something that’s very common now is people hook up, the therapist will hook you up to, this, machine. So they will, put this little thing, on the, the actual needle.

And then electricity would go from the machine, through this and to the needle. The needle will start working like that. And that increases the effect of the treatment. So that’s also very common. So, the thing that people mess up along with acupuncture, I had a lot of patients that come in here and they, they, just died down, and just say, give me some acupuncture. I would not want that. Well, it’s one part of the treatment guys.

It’s not like the treatment can cure anything. It’s one part but you need to do your exercise. You need to do all the other stuff as well. But acupuncture is one part of the treatment. And just to have like a side note here. I’ve been doing these Youtube videos, for a while now and I get quite a lot of questions because people are asking me, “Do I need to go from my daily walks? Is that really necessarily if I really have limited time. Do I need to stand up at work? It’s really hard to stand up. My feet hurt and I’m kind of tired. I can’t think correctly. “

Yes, I’m telling you. You need to be walking every day for 30 to 40 minutes. At least seven days a week.

You need to be standing up at your desk at least two hours a day. You need to do that. That’s the low hanging fruit. That’s the big domino. That’s the stuff that can actually help you very quickly but only if you do it. So I’m not really here to be your friend? I’m here to be your coach and I want you to have results.

I want you to be able to reduce your back pain. And if you’re not walking daily, if you’re not standing up at your desk, then, you’re not serious about healing your back pain and I’m just going to call you out. So just do it.

Don’t try to get out of your homework. It’s easy stuff. You need to walk every day. Why won’t you do it? If you know it’s going to help you, why aren’t you standing up at your desk? So just do it. Don’t make excuses for yourself? It’s really important. Sorry about the rant that I get a lot of questions about this and I’m telling you that is science. It’s not me making something up, but you need to be standing up. You need to be walking if you’re in back pain, because it’s an easy way to reduce back pain anyway.

So, and back to the acupuncture stuff. If you go for acupuncture, you should definitely take it out. So, find out if the person is accredited to give you treatment. You don’t want someone that just like had a weekend course. Most people like physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, they have that like an extra extra training in that. So most of us will be able to put the acupuncture needles in your body and can use that as one thing of the treatment.

That’s about it for today guys. I love you. Take care and I’ll talk to you tomorrow and guys, remember you’re just one step away from healing your back pain. Bye Bye.
